If you follow me on instagram, you will know that our power was off for 2 days after a wicked straight-line storm flew by! What I wanted SO badly was my hot coffee in the morning. Starbucks wasn’t kicking it. Things could be worse, I know!
This humid weather actually makes me want ice cream, how about you? And so I thought, why not mix ice cream and hot coffee and see what happens. That is what you call an affogato, an Italian-based dessert coffee. If you’re feeling really fancy you can add some delicious dessert liquor like amaretto. Or you can be like me and have this in the morning with plain old espresso and ice cream.
Trying to be conscious about the choices here for ice cream, so I chose Halo Top. The brand is “lower” in sugars and also carries non-dairy. The particular one I chose was Chocolate Almond Crunch. It is made with coconut milk :). The chocolate mocha flavor plus the almond flavor.. omg. And then the whipped cream sprinkled with orange zest! You can feel less guilty, too. So many flavors, it is so exciting.
Regular ice cream would do just fine, as would gelato or frozen yogurt. I kind of want to try a mint chocolate chip, so if you have tried it let me know! This beverage pairs very well (btw) with fruity pebble egg-white french toast. Just saying! Maybe I’ll post that recipe this week, too!
What you need:
- Two separate mugs or drinking glasses.
- 1-2 shots of espresso. I used Nespresso’s Corto Flavor.
- If you don’t have an espresso maker, coffee can work, too! I’d use about 1/4 cup of coffee for every cup of ice cream.
- 1 cup Chocolate Almond Crunch Halo Top ice cream, non-dairy. (or whichever ice cream, gelato, or frozen yogurt you like.)
- Cinnamon to sprinkle
- Whipped cream (optional)
- Orange Zest
Directions:
- Wet the rim of a glass or mug.
- Dip the rim into some ground cinnamon or chocolate.
- Drop your ice cream into that same glass or mug.
- Brew espresso into the other glass or mug then pour over the ice cream.
- Dollop some whipped cream on top of that…
- Add your orange zest..
- Enjoy!

There have been a lot of you asking which machine I’ve been using. Below are some products that I use, or that I use similarly to. I love the Nespresso line. I personally have the Delonghi, which seems to be sold out all of the time! Nespresso is so easy with customer service, and they do give you a recycle bag with each purchase so that you can send your pods back to be recycled. These machines are also easy to clean.
